EV Driver Issue of the Week: Speaking the Driver’s Language

Brad Crist

Every week this month, we’re sharing a real driver support call handled by a ChargeMate AI agent. Each story shows a problem drivers actually run into at the charger and how it was resolved. Voices are altered and identifying details are removed.

What happened

A driver visiting from Canada couldn’t get his Hummer EV to start charging. The charger detected the vehicle, but his payment wasn’t going through. After several minutes of trying cards, the payment finally cleared.

During the call, the driver said something to his wife in Korean. From that point on, ChargeMate’s agent answered him in Korean, with no transfer, no hold queue, and no instruction to press a number for another language.

Why language support matters at the charger

The driver was surprised. “Your English was so good, I thought you were American,” he said. Then came the question: “Wait, is this an AI?” His verdict: “An AI, but you’re really good at this.”

As more drivers switch to EVs, operators will hear from more customers who are more comfortable speaking another language. ChargeMate supports more than 20 languages on voice and 80 on chat, helping drivers get support in the language they use every day without waiting for a bilingual agent.

The operator question

What should AI support handle on its own? When should a human step in? And what should operators fix upstream so drivers never have to call? Those are the questions we want this series to explore.
